CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO THE WHARTON GLOBAL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Submitted by AFAM on Sat, 03/16/2019 - 5:38pm

TO JUNIOR FACULTY –

As part of Wharton Global Initiatives, in August 2019 we will be hosting the eighth year of a special annual initiative, the Wharton Global Faculty Development Program. This program aims to assist in the professional development of young scholars from outside the U.S., with a particular focus on learning to publish in the leading academic journals in Management and related areas.

As part of this program, we invite schools to select up to two faculty members from their Management department or equivalent (Strategy, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, Organizational Theory, Entrepreneurship, International Business, etc.), to attend a three-day workshop at the Wharton School on navigating the publication process.

There is no fee for participating in this workshop; Wharton supports the program as a way to share our faculty’s knowledge and experience with the global academic community.

In past years, junior faculty attendees have come from universities in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, providing an opportunity to build connections with a global network of fellow scholars at a similar career stage. Past participants have come from the Stockholm School of Economics, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Munich School of Management, INSEAD, IESE, ESADE, EPFL, University of Lugano, Indian School of Business, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Tilburg University, Rotterdam School of Management, Australia National University, The Second University of Naples, Chinhoyi University of Technology, National Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan, Nanyang Technological University, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Lagos Business School, University of Stellenbosch, University of Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, University of Edinburgh, American University of Cairo, and Singapore Management University.

The workshop sessions will be led by senior standing faculty in the Wharton School’s Management Department. In each half-day session, a faculty member will take participants through the development of one of their recent A-level journal articles, working from the original submission through revisions and responses to reviewers  to final acceptance.. Faculty leaders in previous years have included Professors Raphael Amit, Matthew Bidwell, Adam Grant, Martine Haas, Rahul Kapoor, Katherine Klein, Dan Levinthal, Ian Macmillan, Lori Rosenkopf, Nancy Rothbard, and Nicolaj Siggelkow. These faculty members have recently served or currently serve in senior editorial positions at journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal. Attendees will receive the documents ahead of time and will be expected to have read them thoroughly before each session. There will also be one session in which the participants will give feedback on each other’s papers, but please note that a distinctive feature of this workshop is that its primary focus will be on learning from the publishing experience of Wharton’s management faculty, and providing deep insight into the publishing process in various top journals, rather than on providing intensive feedback on participants’ own papers under development.

As noted above, there is no attendance fee, but attendees will need to arrange and cover their own costs of travel and accommodation in Philadelphia. The dates of the program will allow attendees to travel on to the Academy of Management meetings in Boston directly afterward; the program will begin at 10am on Tuesday, August 6th and end on Thursday, August 8th at 2:30pm.

To apply for the program, please send the following materials to Kayleen Palumbo at palumboj@wharton.upenn.edu by no later than April 15, 2019:

  • A brief letter of nomination from your department chair (Please note that each school can nominate up to two candidates only)
  • A brief application letter introducing yourself and your research interests, and explaining your interest in the program
  • Your academic resume

We will notify applicants of their admission to the program by the end of April. If you are accepted to the program, you will be asked to send along a draft of a paper under development by mid-July, to help provide context for the faculty session leaders and for group discussion.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact Kayleen Palumbo at palumboj@wharton.upenn.edu.
